An Open Letter To My Love on Valentine's Day

Dear Love,

Happy Valentine’s Day! Can you believe it’s already been over 5.5 years that we’ve been together? Sometimes it feels like time flew, and other times, I feel like I’ve known you all my life.

I think about the day we first met often, because it always puts a smile on my face. I remember a herd of people rushed in just as the conductor mumbled, “Beware of the closing doors.” We locked eyes for a split second just as you walked in, and I remember thinking that you looked so care-free. I’m so happy you decided to talk to me, moments before your stop, and asked me out to coffee. It’s so crazy to think we could’ve missed each other but you decided to walk into that car at that time, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. Even crazier to realize you had just moved to NYC and was exploring Brooklyn that day, and I had taken a train that I NEVER take, only because I had to reschedule my apartment viewing after getting sick. If there is such a thing as fate, I feel it brought you to me when you stepped into that subway car, and changed my life forever.

Later we became a family of three when we brought our little puppy Uni into our lives. I remember the awe we felt after she came home and discovered her birthday was June 9, the same day we met on the subway train years ago! It’s like we were meant to be a family! Perhaps fate brought us all together. I’d like to think so. You two are my family, my heart and soul, my everything. You two give me purpose, direction, and unconditional love, and for that I’m forever grateful.

Especially on a day like today, I think a lot about what love is. My understanding of love continues to grow and mature, but if there’s one thing I do know for sure, is that the love you two show for me has changed me for the better. And that’s the kind of love I want to give in return. Thank you for your love. I will never give up on us, and I will always put WE before ME.

I love you.

Your Valentine,
Annie
